Port Hawkesbury Ceilidh Market

Port Hawkesbury Ceilidh Market – Fresh Beginnings

The Port Hawkesbury Ceilidh Market will open this July in the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre.

The new market’s name is inspired by the traditional meaning of Ceilidh as a visit or a gathering. Organizers hope that the spirit of the market with create a welcoming atmosphere where the community will buy local produce and crafts, engage in workshops and demonstrations, and develop a local foodie culture.

The first market for 2018 will be Thursday July 19, running weekly until October 11, on Thursdays from 11am to 2pm, with a Christmas Market in December.

A local steering committee comprised of community volunteers and partners from the business community has formed to launch the endeavor. Mayor Brenda Chisholm Beaton is happy the market is restarting, “The fresh beginning of this market is another example of the community volunteers, the business community and government working together to achieve a goal.” She continues, “The Port Hawkesbury Ceilidh Market is another example that that Port Hawkesbury is open for business.”

Recognizing the opportunities for incubating new business through the traditional market has led the Eastern Strait Regional Enterprise Network (ESREN) to partner in the organization of the Market. “We see the opportunity for growth in many of the small businesses that participate in the markets but many of them face significant barriers in transitioning from home-based to store-front businesses”, says Misty MacDonald, Economic Development Officer with ESREN.

“Our role on the steering committee will be to focus on strategies to help remove some of the barriers and provide tools and resources to these entrepreneurs that will help them to grow”. One of the ways the committee plans to help is by providing both a physical and digital market space for vendors; a coordinated marketing effort will make use of the web and social media to help vendors sell product outside of the one market day per week.

The Market Steering committee is planning and generating ideas to provide the best atmosphere to customers and vendors. The committee will be reaching out to potential vendors in the coming weeks and encourages anyone who is interested in participating as a vendor or volunteering their time in the new market to connect with the committee by emailing ceilidhmarket@gmail.com.
